I collect WWI recruitment posters, and last night I came across an American poster that made me feel sad and stupid in equal parts. We really are as simple and gullible as everyone says, and I think this poster says it all--particularly when set beside the generous and clever French cartoons you love. The title is: "Whither thou goest I will go : where thou diest I will die -- the Lord do so to me and more also if aught but death part thee and me." The caption is: "Dedicated to France and sold for the Benefit of her Fatherless Children". It's no wonder they laugh at us.
Yeah, we really are suckers. The French can go to hell. No GIs should die for José Bové.
